Why it matters

Where the EIN unblocks your Trust.

Irrevocable trusts

An irrevocable trust is its own taxpayer and files Form 1041 under its own EIN.

After the grantor's death

A revocable living trust becomes irrevocable at death, and needs an EIN at that point, since the grantor's SSN can no longer be used.

Trust bank and brokerage accounts

Banks and brokerages require the trust's EIN to open or retitle accounts in the trust's name.

Trust questions

Asked by people like you.

Does a revocable living trust need an EIN while the grantor is alive?+

Usually not, while revocable, it typically reports under the grantor's SSN. The EIN becomes necessary when the trust becomes irrevocable, most commonly at the grantor's death.

Who is the responsible party for a trust EIN?+

The trustee. You'll provide the trustee's name and SSN/ITIN on the application, encrypted, used only for the filing.

What information should I have ready?+

The trust's exact legal name and date (from the trust document), and the trustee's details. Our application walks through the rest in plain language.
